Dean directed the triumphant debut production Sweet Charity for Hayes Theatre Company, receiving the Helpmann Award for Best Director, Next to Normal (Melbourne Theatre Company),DreamSong (Theatreworks), Straight (Red Stitch), Hansel and Gretel (OzOpera), and for The Production Company The Pirates of Penzance and (co-direction of) The Producers and Anything Goes, and will direct La Cage Aux Folles shortly.

Other credits include The Last Five Years (Helpmann nom), Prodigal (45DS), Once We Lived Here (45DS) and Virgins: A Musical Threesome(CUB Malthouse, NYMF). He created the verbatim theatre piece Gaybies, a hit of the 2013 Midsumma Festival and premiering in Sydney 2015. He recently directed a new production of Once We Lived Here for London’s Kings Head Theatre and will direct Miriam Margolyes in I’ll Eat You Last for MTC in October.

With composer Mathew Frank he has written the musicals Prodigal (off-Broadway season, York Theatre, Green Room – Best Original Score), Once We Lived Here (Green Room – Best New Musical, NYC season and UK debut at the King’s Head this year), Virgins: A Musical Threesome and The Silver Donkey as well as the songs for the Amy Winehouse musical episode of Channel 10’s Mr and Mrs Murder.

His cabaret credits as writer/director include Britney Spears: The Cabaret, Rhonda Burchmore’s Vinyl Viagra, Liza (on an E) (West End season 2013), In Vogue: Songs By Madonna (2013 and 2014 Edinburgh Fringe), Sweet Dreams: Songs by Annie Lennox (2014 Adelaide Fringe Award - Best Cabaret), I’m Every Woman (Spiegeltent, Sydney Opera House, Sydney Theatre Award – Best Cabaret), Newley Discovered (Sydney Opera House/Adelaide Cabaret Festival), Experiment: Cole Porter (ACF) and Josie in the Bathhouse (Spiegeltent, ACF).

He is Worldwide Associate Director of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – The Musical and is a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
